“My wife and I moved here 2.5 years ago from London UK. We are giving Vancouver another year, and if prices don’t return to sanity, we’re out of here.”

Sean at vancouvercondo.info May 16th, 2011 at 10:07 pm“My wife and I moved here 2.5 years ago from London UK, (I am Cdn). We are giving Vancouver another year, and if prices don’t return to sanity, we’re out of here. We are both professionals and well-paid by Vancouver standards. But we did the math and for an “investment” in a home in Van, prices would have to rise 10% annually to match what we can make by taking our down-payment and investing it conservatively. So in the meantime, we are letting this all wash over us, and happily renting. But Vancouver needs to wake up and see that what’s happening is of ZERO benefit to the city and is going to make it a much worse place.”

  1. People won’t wake up. People are so obsessed with RE here in Vancouver.
I just overhead coworkers’ conversation on RE, which made me sick! Sigh!

  2. I hate to say this, but even if the crash started tomorrow, it will take three or four years before prices even approach sanity. Think of an ocean liner turning around.

  3. 和谐的房地产泡沫

you should read about the land speculators in the 1860s-1900s in Port Moody, petitioning ottawa to terminate the rail line in Port Moody, instead of Granville/Vancouver – hilarious stuff.

history doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes.

    • In the early days of Vancouver, homesteaders had to deal with huge empty pieces of land seperating them and making life difficult. The land was owned by speculators.

  4. 和谐的房地产泡沫

i just finished reading my vancouver atlas – the photos of the land are incredible – $500 in 1880 to clear an acre! that’s a small fortune.

but yeah, this entire region is founded on real estate bubbles, rampant speculation and hare-brained schemes.

don’t let that discourage you, get out there and buy a piece of Dunbar with a 0/40 mortgage – what’s the worst that could happen??

  5. left already

All I have to say is LEAVE!
    Leave, the sooner the better.
We gave the same try Vancouver for two years with my wife. We were thinking of going back to Holland for some time.
Finally we called it quit and moved to San Diego.
    We love this place. Absolutely!
Vancouver is a total total rip off, anyway you look at it.
No quality housing, no quality jobs, no quality lifestyle due to his horrendous never ending rain and grey weather, high prices for everything and so little value for your money.
Your life will be much better if you move out of that rainhole hell.
