There are affordable rentals in Vancouver but you don’t want to live in them. A building that was a decent place to live 30 or 40 years ago might be a disgusting deathtrap now. This is missing in the equation when some bears so, “oh rent has only gone up less than inflation”. What you are renting is declining in quality.
You have to compare NEW units today to NEW units back in the 70s. Most NEW units today are “luxury condos”. And no, I don’t care about stainless steel and granite. I’m talking about what we get as a functional living area.
And don’t get me started on the quality of other tenants versus what you had a generation ago. Trust me, I know, modest-priced rental housing can be a scary place.
Considering that banks seem to give away mortgages like they are Candy, what makes you think you won’t encounter those people in your shiny new concrete box in the sky?
Looking at my 50 year old building: I can’t complain. Yeah, there are some quirks in here (the kitchen cabinets come to mind) but other than that I have an unobstructed view of English Bay, Vanier Park, Kits and UBC. If I’d try to buy a place with that kind of view I’d find myself enslaved to the banks for the rest of my life.
Neighbours? Know half my floor, the other half seems to be “transient” but hey, who cares, that’s part of city living.
If they think the rent is too damn high, wait till they see the sale prices.
