I don’t think the cartoon was created with ironic intent.
If Vancouverite was wearing flannel shirt, flipped up bicycle hat and horn rimmed glasses irony could be assumed.
Now if they had a fully-gowned Chinaman kneeling on all fours behind the knees of the guy on the right it might be ironic but only to readers here.
The question mark in the caption confuses me and makes it hard to figure out the cartoonist’s point.
Yeah, unclear meaning…
Rising intonation? Sloppy writing/editing?
The fact that it’s a statement presented as a faux-question in a weird way ‘works’ with the ‘hubris’ conclusion.
There’s a nice ambiguity to the cartoon, probably by design. Both bulls and bears can choose to interpret it as validation for their point of view.
The newspaper business is tough these days, can’t afford to alienate any segment of your readership.
