Toronto – “Everyone my age and younger is getting into these 500k+ mortgages, thinking they’ve arrived in life. I rent and feel no shame.”

“I live in the Mississauga/GTA, and virtually every billboard, bus shelter and cheap cable ad scroller is taken up by the smiling face of a real estate agent. The condos are still going up, the developments are still breaking ground….it’s a suburban nightmare.
My grandparents had a nice house on the other side of the city; the result of a lifetime of hard work and frugal living. They still travelled mind you, but they saved.
Everyone my age and younger is getting into these 500k+ mortgages, thinking they’ve arrived in life. What happens when interest rates go back to something realistic?
I rent and feel no shame. The ‘buy real estate’ strategy of my boomer parents doesn’t cut it anymore. It just isn’t affordable. There’s more to life than hardwood floors and granite countertops.”

  1. This person gets it. Taking on excessive debt isn’t “arriving in life”. It’s more like chaining an anchor to your neck. Far from making you “rich”, it makes you a prime candidate for future bankrupcy.

    • With 500k debt, I should hope they are making over 130k per year. If so, it’s not out of line with what past generations have done, although one must recognize that the risks are real. I can understand the desire to finance the good life. If you’re doing well and confident in the future, it makes sense.

The thing that disturbs me are the people who are faking it. There are a lot of people financing the good life who are not in a strong position regarding future income, assets, etc. I know the strengths and weaknesses of my own position, and what I have seen looks insane. It’s as if they believe nothing bad can ever truly happen.

  2. Wealth through debt, Wisdom though ignorance, Peace through war!

Everytime I read 1984, the less I see it as fiction and more as prophecy…

    • that was the point.

take it a step further and read huxley’s brave new world

      orgy porgy! orgy porgy!

    • Every time I read or hear a reference to 1984 the more I understand the value of a liberal arts education.

      • it’s too bad the word ‘liberal’ is a dirty word these days

too bad the bc liberals hijacked it to name their party, too

it reminds me of that Balzac quote: “the name of any political party is always the opposite of their intentions” something along those lines.
