“My partner and I make double the median family income, have no dependents, and still can’t afford to buy.”

I think Vancouver has an affordability problem. It might not be felt by anyone who bought more then 5 years ago, but anyone trying to enter the market today is screwed.”

  1. So much depends on where you are looking, priced out of West side maybe, but how about Maple Ridge? Mission?

But yeah I know the feeling, even with good salaries we’re not finding anything within 10-15km distance from our jobs. To be specific, our limit is $500k, or $650k with a suite. Even further out (pomo, coquitlam) we’re struggling to find a place in that range (but in that area we’d expect some kind of private yard, and not have to deal with $50-100k renovations to bring it to reasonable standard).

We could look further out, but then we might as well live in a different city.

  2. We always said if we could only afford Surrey or further, we would just keep going and get out of the lower mainland entirely. It looks like that is what is going to happen this year, and we will watch the unraveling from a safe distance as Vancouver loses yet another young, educated family.

  3. They CAN afford to buy. They don’t want to. Today’s market is for ignorants and the insane.

  4. Funny thing is, I thought prices were way out of whack in 2006! That was one of the reasons my wife and I left way back then.
