“My wife and I are trying to start a family and we are seriously considering moving to one of the gulf islands when a baby arrives. I hate to admit it but it looks like Vancouver has got the better of me.”

manna from heaven at vancouvercondo.info May 19th, 2011 at 7:03 pm- “This market would have to move down dramatically for me to afford where I want to live. My wife and I are trying to start a family and we are seriously considering moving to one of the gulf islands when a baby arrives. We could buy a nice house with several acres outright and still have a very nice cushion. Doesn’t sound too bad does it? I hate to admit it but it looks like Vancouver has got the better of me.”

    • In 14 years he only paid off $100,000 out of $400,000? And that’s including his deposit? He either couldn’t afford the place or he is just messing around.

  1. Sorry to hear that areas outside of Vancouver does not suit your family. Burnaby? Coquitlam? Port Moody? I guess it’s all or nothing.

  2. Jim,

I loved the article. I pull out this two quotes from it:

“The collapse of the bubble robbed us of our freedom to choose where we can live.”
“Homes should be different from stocks,” he said. “They shouldn’t be the object of speculative investing. If home prices move too much, they can ruin your life.”

That’s what’s awaiting so many Vancouverites in the near future unfortunately…

try the Comox Valley- good living at a decent price. You get the water, skiing, mountain biking, fishing, all the stuff that people claim keeps them in Vancouver. The difference is that things are so much cheaper there you can actually afford to put all your kids in a ski program, and you have the time to go mtn biking.

  4. I thought of the gulf island thing as well, but we travel a fair bit and taking ferries all the time for travel and visiting family seems too much in terms of cost and time. Plus you have to worry about guys driving their truck off the ramp!!
Is the fraser valley a no-no for you?
