Young BC-born Couple Leave Vancouver Because of RE Costs – “Early financial independence instead of mortgage servitude.”

This post from ‘Jordan’ as a comment (21 May 2008 at 10:29pm) in the recent “Anybody else here know people leaving Vancouver” thread. The importance of these kinds of losses to BC merits a front-page post:

“My wife is leaving this week to see Toronto for the first time, looking for an area we could raise our family in. We’re both 26, born and raised in BC and now have 2 young kids. She’s never been away from them for more then a night so this week is going to be hell for both of us, but we don’t see any practical alternative. It’s a heart wrenching decision leaving our families here, but we want to raise our kids in a house with a yard without selling our souls to the bank. We can get a house there for 50% less and have the mortgage paid off in about 10 years. This will help us to fulfill our dreams of early financial independence instead of mortgage servitude.”

  1. moscowrealestate

    Great post !
Generally it is very intresting kind of investment, but I think that real estate is loosing it’s price too much.
I own a site with database of prices for Moscow real estate and from the begining of this year it wasn’t grew….
Anyway canadian real estate is more stabil in this case.

  2. i’m a long time vancouver realtor and over the past 2 years i’ve noticed more baby boomer torontonians crossing my path, some are CEOs, buying on the coast and enjoying their condos with an eye to retiring on the coast.

  3. psychophysiology says : I absolutely agree with this !

  4. Stop lying Maggie. No way on earth Torontonians are looking to retire in BC. It’s too damp, too expense and too far away from their friends, family, doctors, specialists, etc. Vacation maybe but retire?

    I call BS.

  5. i call BS too. My brothers and I all lived in Vancouver at the same time for about 3 years. we were always trying to get my parents to move to Vancouver.

“but it’s so beautiful! you’ll have mild winters/seawall/whistler/mountains/green/west coast lifestyle”.

My mom always countered with the rain. i have to agree with her i would rather have -10 and sunny than +12 and rainy.

plus the friends, and the network of specialist that people build over a lifetime in one place. Uproot their lives just to have mild winters? get over it!

  6. not to mention the cost. My family home was a 4 bedroom in a good neighborhood (all families, good schools, parks, transit, no crime ) massive back yard, 30 minutes by car or train to city centre.

you could buy it today for less than $4ook- the house i sold when i left vancouver was a crappy fixer upper for more than $400k. my father thought i was a complete idiot for buying. he is also a building inspector, so he thought i was a TOTAL idiot for buying a run down house.

  7. Somehow i missed the point. Probably lost in translation :) Anyway … nice blog to visit.

    cheers, Endanger
